About Burgs

We include here a brief back ground about the Teacher to give you the confidence that he is an extremely highly attained yogi with a history of success in teaching Western and Eastern Yogis both entry level and as advance practitioners. For those of you interested in joining one of Burgs’ retreats for the first time here is a little information.

Burgs has been teaching meditation in Europe and Asia for the past twelve years. He predominantly teaches The Samatha (Serenity) and Vipassana (Insight) meditation system of The Buddha as expounded in the most venerated of all mediation manuals The Vissudhimagga. In this he was personally tutored by the famous Burmese Master The Venerable Pa Auk Sayadaw. While he was practicing as a monk under Sayadaw’s guidance, he became the first westerner and lay person to complete the entire series of 40 Meditation practices taught by the Buddha. During his time in Burma he helped many yogis, from beginners to seasoned adepts to develop a wide range of meditation skills and make progress along the path.

Before meeting The Venerable Pa Auk Sayadaw Burgs trained as the main assistant one of Asia’s most famous healers and mediation teachers, Merta Ada. He helped him set up his hugely successful Meditation school in Indonesia (www.Balimeditation.com). The Healing meditation practices he learned during this period influence his teachings which have a strong emphasis on the application of meditation in the maintenance and cultivation of physical and mental health. While learning from Merta Ada he was also trained in Chi Kung by a number of renowned Taoist teachers in Asia, and today integrates many of these practices into his teaching system.

After disrobing as a monk in Burma he was asked to go to recieve teachings from the deeply reveared Tibetan Light Master Dodrupchen Rinpoche who gave him the direct Dzogchen mind transmissions and subsequently recognised his attainment of some of the highest levels of Dzogchen practice. He was subsequently asked by him to begin to meditate for the welfare of others.

He has been teaching in the west for over 14 years now.

Burgs has an extremely deep grounding and understanding in all aspects of meditation and the spiritual path, and has a profound appreciation of how different spiritual practices and traditions fit together as a whole.

As he can directly perceive the mechanics of the mind and body he can directly apprehend how various meditation and contemplation techniques work. By clearly explaining their various functions, and be being able to teach them, he can guide yogis towards the realisation of their spiritual aspirations in an open and non-dogmatic way.

Such aspirations are deeply personal, and evolve as one comes to understand more deeply the way of things. These may be to live a simple and good life, or to equip yourself with the tools to truely be of service. They may be to come to understand what ‘God’ or the embodiment of pure love may be; or they may be to understand, experience and come to express the nature of pure awareness. Or they may be to recieve the systematic and inspirational teachings to Nibbana and realize the full embodiment of awakening itself. Whatever they are he will guide you according to your wish if you come with a pure heart.

It is truely rare to find such a highly accomplished and experienced teacher in the West, particularly one who is himself still a lay person and able to resonate with the needs of those wanting to learn meditation within the context of there lay (non-monastic) life.

Whether you are a complete beginners or the an experienced yogi or monk you are invited to come and do week long retreats with him or come and train for 1 to 5 month or even longer stays at his long retreat center in Staffordshire.
